The Trojan horse method
Two nuclei that react in a star meet at energies far below their Coulomb barrier, so in the laboratory they almost never touch. The trick: hide one of them inside a bigger nucleus and fire that in fast enough to get over the barrier. Inside the nuclear field the carrier breaks up; the hidden piece reacts at the low relative energy of the star, and the rest flies on and is detected.
