Inclusive breakup

A weakly bound projectile a = b + x passes a nucleus A and only b is detected. Either both fragments fly off and A stays in its ground state (elastic breakup), or x does something to A: excites it, exchanges nucleons with it, or fuses with it (nonelastic breakup; the fusion of x alone is incomplete fusion). The sum of the two is what an experiment that counts b measures.
