One-nucleon knockout
A fast projectile grazes a light target and loses one nucleon; the rest flies on and is detected. The target reaches only the part of the orbital that sticks out past the core, its surface and tail, so the count of such events, against a reaction model that knows the orbital's shape, measures how full the orbital is.
