One-nucleon transfer
A deuteron grazes ²⁰⁸Pb and leaves its neutron behind: ²⁰⁸Pb(d,p)²⁰⁹Pb. The proton flies on; the neutron stays, in one orbital of ²⁰⁹Pb. Which orbital is told by the proton's angular distribution (the angular momentum l the neutron brings), and how much of the level is that one orbital is the spectroscopic factor S, the measured cross section divided by a reaction calculation made with S = 1.
